Whitney Boin Whitney Boin was a 17 year old high school student when he won his first award for the fine design of a mahogany table. Years of trial and error later, he attracted the notice of the world with his presentation of seven engagement rings, diamond necklaces and pearl bracelets. He continues to gather awards and push the limits of design and materials. Boin was born in New Jersey to parents who were craftspeople, parents who appreciated their son's innate talents. At 20, he talked them into investing the balance of what would have been spent on college to buy platinum and diamonds. He created designs to enter in competitions and did very well. Years later, he continues his success. Competitions push him. "Award competitions are a way to step out of what I usually do and make a statement about what is going on at the time . . . an invitation to create something that is larger than life," says Boin. Boin's designs are inherently classical, but he chooses to include a contemporary influence. Some would say key attractions in his work are the evidence reminiscent of intriguing works of architecture and sculpture. He claims an attraction for nuance and new. "Steel and gold, rubber and acrylic sheet, granite, hematite, onyx, aluminum, etched crystal . . . I have to find out what the implications are of integrating new materials into a piece," he said. |
